About Us

The Disability Law Association (DLA) is a club in the Common Law Section at the University of Ottawa, which aims to discuss legal issues as they relate to disability law. Students do not need to have disability to join the club.

The DLA examines the intersection that disability has with respect to human rights law, and other areas of law which may have an impact upon students with disabilities.

The club’s primary goal is to carry out a social justice initiative and to provide a forum to discuss these issues as it may present itself. It also wishes to implement, where possible, a barrier free environment for all law students studying law at the University of Ottawa.

The DLA Executive

Emma Arenson is a second year student in the Common Law Program at the University of Ottawa and is the co- chair of the University of  Ottawa Disability Law Association.  She is interested in tax, labour, and IP law, but is always learning and exploring new and  areas of the law.  As well as being the D.L.A. co- chair she is on the steering committee for the Law Union, a mentor through the Women Legal Mentorship Program, and is a researcher for a pro-bono project with the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee. In her free time she like to play board games and ride her bike. When she has access to a glass studio she works on commissions for her stained glass business.

Shermeen Khan is  is a third year student in the Common Law program. She joined the DLA when it was in its inception in 2011, and is now co-chair along with Emma Arenson. She completed her undergraduate work in sociology and languages, and served on various accessibility-related committees. Some of her  aspirations include working in the field of family law, while remaining an advocate for people with disabilities. When she's not doing work for school (or pretending to do work for school), she can be found at a perfume counter, reading for pleasure, or sleeping.

Richard Francis is the first year representative for the Disability Law Association.

Marco Kuyu is the translator for the Disability Law Association with  Stéphane Sérafin.  He is a second year French common law student. He holds a civil law degree from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. Marco’s areas of interest in law are intellectual property and public law, particularly taxation and administrative law. He believes in diversity, equality of all human beings and community involvement is of great important to him. That’s some reasons that attract to the DLA. Volunteering with the Pro Bono and the SFUO’s Food Bank are some of his memorable experience. Marco is an Aikido student and practices it on regular basis. He loves to dance salsa.

Stéphane Sérafin is a second-year student in the Programme de droit canadien, a bijural programme focusing on both the common law and civil law traditions. He serves as translator for the Disability Law Association in a joint fashion alongside Marco Kuyu. Stéphane's primary fields of interest in law are constitutional law, comparative law and immigration law. His interest in the field of disability law is sparked by a strong interest in the rights of minorities and other historically disadvantaged groups in the context of a democratic society.
